Stand-alone Oak Framed Garages

We supply and deliver Oak framed garages for you or a builder to quickly, easily and cost-effectively build on your premises. We supply direct to end users, builders, architects, designers, framers and wholesalers.

As well as the Oak frames, we offer Oak trusses, Oak cladding, Oak doors, Oak windows and a whole range of joinery accessories so you can fully customise your building.

Before leaving us, our Oak garages are assembled, erected, coded and de-assembled to ensure that all pieces are present and correct.

You will need a builder to construct foundations for your Oak kit and to also erect the Oak structure.

Using Our Garage Designer

You can use our garage designer above to create your perfect garage. There are a range of controls available so you get exactly what you need (The brickwork shown is not included).

Garage Type

• Type
  Allows you to choose between Gable, Catslide and Hip and Ridge Garages. These control the shape of the frame and the roof of the garage.
• Bays
  You can select one of the pre-set bays or use the custom button to type in the number of bays you would like. Each bay is 3m wide and your garage will automatically increase or decrease in size based on the amount of bays you select.
• Depth
  The depth control lets you decide how far back your garage goes, you get the choice between 5.5m and 6m. Our standard garages are usually 5.5m deep.
• Trusses
  This control is only available on Gable Garages that don't have a roof room and have more than one bay. This control lets you add trusses between each bay.
• Thickness
  The Thickness controls the section size of the posts and headplates.

Studding | Rafters

• Studding
  The Studding control lets you choose between Oak and softwood studding.
• Rafters
  The Rafters control lets you choose between Oak and softwood rafters (this also controls the ridge beam).

Boarding | Battens | Roofing

• Boarding
  The Boarding control lets you add Larch, Cedar or Oak Tongue and Groove boarding (or remove it all together). Boarding is used if you don't want to see any of the battens and shingles from the inside of your garage.
• Battens
  The Battens control allows you to choose whether or not you want battens with your garage or not and whether you want Oak or Softwood. Battens are used to fix shingles to.
• Roofing
  The roofing options lets you choose between Untreated Cedar and Treated Cedar Shingles. The treated shingles are treated with a stain so they are darker then the untreated and slightly more durable, but, they will both still go grey in the sun over a number of years. You also get the option to not have shingles at all if you're supplying your own tiles.

Sides | Partitions

• Cladding
  The cladding control lets you choose to add European Oak feather edge cladding to your garage if you want it.
• Wood Store
  The Wood Store option lets you add a covered, open-sided store to either side of your garage. If you have a roof room you can only have a wood store on the left hand side (as you look) of the garage as the stairs are on the right.
• Partitions
  Partitions allows you to add studwork and oak feather edge partitions between each individual bay of your garage.

Garage Doors

• Garage Doors
  The Garage Doors control works similarly to the partitions control in that you can choose which bays have our Heavy Duty Oak Doors on them and which ones don't.
• Ironmongery
  The ironmongery control allows you to choose whether or not we supply heavy duty hinges with your doors. By default all doors are supplied with ironmongery but you can choose not to include them and source them yourself. (Door handles are not supplied regardless.)

Roof Room

• Roof Room
  The Roof Room control sets whether you want a room above your garage or not. This control automatically increases the overall height of the garage and adds an oak staircase and single door. This option resets any other garage setting which is not available with a roof room. E.g. If you have a catslide garage selected and you want a roof room, the garage will automatically reset to a gable roof.

• Laying the foundations.
• Erecting the structure (either yourself or with a builder).
• Protection and ongoing maintenance making sure your Oak frame structure and joinery are looking their best at all times.
• The final and most important step of all... using and enjoying your oak garage.

Delivery of Your Oak Structure

Delivery time – How long will it take for your oak structure to be delivered?

We are currently working on an approximate 9 - 11 weeks (from drawing sign off) lead time from agreement of your final drawings.

How Your Garage Will Arrive

Your garage will arrive in kit form packaged similarly to the photograph below. All pieces will be banded together on a pallet. All the woodwork is already done and designed to be constructed by a general builder.

Oak framing has enjoyed a long tradition in the UK, being the favourite home building method for the majority of people, designers and architects for centuries.

These days its very rare to open a home building, architecture or renovating magazine and not find a case study featuring the use of oak somewhere, and the warmth and appeal seem to keep growing.

Oak buildings today offer an unusual mix with very traditional techniques and often combined with very modern materials. There is just something about the look, feel and smell of oak which is innately appealing to both traditionalists and modernists, and people love the fact that it's such a naturally long-lasting material.

Oak trees are harvested when they are around 80 years old. Each one will produce roughly 15 ft3 (cubic feet) of construction grade oak. Almost all of the oak used in British green oak homes is sourced from sustainable plantations in France and Germany, with companies replanting many trees to compensate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission?

Not always. One and two bay Oak framed garages sometimes do not need planning permission. If they are under 30m2 of floor area coverage and under 4.0m in ridge height they tend to not need planning permission. However, we would always advise you to check with your local planning authority first as it can vary from area to area.

Build cost?

It's always good to shop around when getting quotes for a builder to actually assemble your Oak framed structure or building. Builders' assembly prices will differ depending on the size of the product and so they will normally want to see the 3D drawings before they quote.

What if there is a problem with my Oak kit?

We take quality control very seriously at every step and our craftsmanship speaks for itself. In the extremely unlikely event that there is some kind of problem with the kit which is our fault, we will sort it out efficiently and quickly.

Is there anything else I'll need?

Screws for the Common Rafters

While the main frame is held with supplied oak pegs, you'll need some stainless steel screws for the rafters. It's important to use a material like stainless steel that won't be corroded by the tannins in the oak.

Screws for the Battens and Optional Boarding

We recommend using 40mm stainless steel screws to fit your battens either across the garage rafters or across the boarding if you're choosing it. Softwood battens can be screwed straight in. If you're using oak battens, pre-drilling the battens will save a lot of effort as oak is very hard.

If you're fitting boarding under your shingles or tiles, we recommend 40mm stainless steel screws to fix it to the garage rafters. Because boarding has the potential to expand and contract with moisture (see the information below about treating boarding), we recommend pre-drilling the boarding and holding it with the head of the screw so it has the ability to move slightly if required. Similarly, when fitting your boarding, don't butt it right together, but leave a small gap between the tongue and the groove to allow moisture movement if it needs it.

Sealant for Optional Boarding

If you're fitting boarding between the garage rafters and the battens and shingles, it's important that you seal it all round before installing it with something like an OSMO 420 protection oil to prevent moisture movement and any warping of the boards.

Nails for the Shingle Roof if fitting to Treated Softwood Battens

If you're buying cedar shingles and you're fitting to treated softwood battens, we recommend Silicone Bronze ARS nails as they won't be corroded by the natural acidity of the cedar.

Nails for the Shingle Roof if fitting to Oak Battens

If you're buying cedar shingles and you're fitting to Oak battens, we recommend thicker, Stainless Steel Nails as the oak is much harder the softwood.

Our Design Service

Our experience and knowledge enable us to offer a unique and professional design service to assist our clients from start to finish of their oak framing projects. Our staff use CAD drawing software and design tools to produce extensive drawings and plans for our oak frame structures. These can be used for planning applications, building plans and design models to produce your everlasting oak structure.

We are happy to work with your architect, builder, structural engineer or designer to create your oak frame structure.

Our design service covers a vast range of possibilities offered by structural oak frames. Our professional and experienced team of designers view and approach each project individually understanding your requirements of what you desire the frame to look like along with keeping within a solid structure which will last for centuries.

Our ideology is to provide a design, unique, tailor-made to your requirements and create an oak structure of elegance, craftsmanship, natural beauty and purpose that will mellow and generate true design as it matures.

How To Order Your Oak Framed Garage

Ordering from Oak Timber Structures is straightforward. Nevertheless, our team is on hand to help throughout the process. Here are the simple steps to order a bespoke oak garage:

1. First, create the oak garage using the designer or send drawings to contact@oaktimberstructures.co.uk.
2. For online orders, click ‘Add to Basket’.
3. Navigate to your shopping basket where you can checkout securely online. We accept all major credit cards excluding American Express (as image). If you run into any checkout issues, please contact us using the online chat or call us and we’ll talk you through the process. Alternatively, you can order over the phone.
4. We then produce technical drawings for you to sign off and gain approval from a structural engineer if needed. CAD drawings take between 2-3 working days to produce.
5. If you are unhappy with an aspect of the drawings, we encourage you to call and seek advice from our helpful and friendly staff. They’ll revise the drawings accordingly and send them back to you for re-approval.
6. Once signed off, we add your structure to the production queue and create it according to the stated lead times. During this time, many people use the approved drawings to get their groundwork in place if required.
7. Our skilled team assembles the oak garage to make sure there are no issues. This also allows us to code all components for seamless assembly. We then dismantle the garage and organise it into transportable kit form.
8. If you're running behind schedule, we're happy to store your structure for up to 4 weeks at no extra charge. Please note that we limit storage to 4 weeks. As green oak dries, it shrinks. Shrinkage is normal. In fact, our skilled staff prepares your structure for shrinkage to fuse joints, making them tighter and more robust. Yet, after 4 weeks, joints can become misaligned and harder to assemble, so it's important to limit storage time.
9. We schedule delivery by liaising with you once your bespoke oak garage is complete.
